From ‘FA9LA’ to ‘Kaho Na Kaho’: Arabic music that shaped Bollywood’s biggest hits

Bollywood has always been a melting pot of cultures, especially when it comes to music. Over the decades, Hindi cinema has borrowed, blended and beautifully reimagined sounds from around the world. One of its most striking musical relationships has been with Arabic music. From hypnotic folk refrains and mystical Sufi undertones to bass-heavy rap and desert-inspired beats, Arabic influences have shaped some of Bollywood’s most unforgettable songs.

From retro classics to viral chartbusters, here is a timeline of how Arabic music carved its space in Hindi cinema.

2/10

‘FA9LA’ from Dhurandhar (2025)

The boldest Arabic crossover in recent Bollywood, ‘FA9LA’ features Bahraini rapper Flipperachi and blends Middle Eastern rap with grand cinematic scale. The song exploded across social media, largely due to Akshaye Khanna’s chilling gangster presence in Dhurandhar, opposite Ranveer Singh. Its gritty Arabic flow paired with intense visuals marked a rare moment when Arabic hip-hop directly shaped a mainstream Bollywood soundtrack.

3/10

‘Jamal Kudu’ from Animal (2023)

This hypnotic folk-inspired track became a viral storm thanks to Bobby Deol’s terrifying yet magnetic presence in Animal. Rooted in Arabic folk tradition, ‘Jamal Kudu’ carried an ancient, raw energy that matched the savage intensity of his character. Bobby’s unique glass-balancing dance went viral across social media. Its haunting rhythm proved that Arabic folk could elevate modern action drama into something primal and unforgettable.

4/10

‘Afghan Jalebi’ from Phantom (2015)

‘Afghan Jalebi’ turned Katrina Kaif into a global dance sensation. With its blazing Middle Eastern beats, fast rhythms and festive energy, the song became one of the decade’s most recognisable party tracks. The Arabic folk flavour paired with Katrina’s explosive performance made it wildly popular across clubs, weddings and international dance stages.

5/10

‘Mashallah’ from Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

Shot against expansive desert landscapes, ‘Mashallah’ became a stunning fusion of romance and Arabic rhythm. Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s sizzling chemistry added star power to the hypnotic beats. The song beautifully melded Arabic musical textures with Bollywood spectacle and remains one of the most visually striking dance numbers of the 2010s.

6/10

‘Dil Cheez Tujhe Dedi’ from Airlift (2016)

This soft romantic track features gentle Arabic instrumentation beneath its Hindi melody. Set against the emotional backdrop of Airlift, the song showcased the tender side of Arabic influence in Bollywood music. Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur’s restrained chemistry perfectly complemented the warmth and emotional depth of the composition, proving that Arabic sounds do not always need to be loud to be powerful.

7/10

‘Mayya Mayya’ from Guru (2007)

One of 'Guru' movie's most unforgettable highlights was the iconic ‘Mayya Mayya’. Composed by A.R. Rahman, the song featured Mallika Sherawat and was sung by Chinmayi Sripada along with Egyptian singer Maryem Toller. Not many know that Rahman personally trained Maryem to sing for the film. With its Arabic rhythms, sensual energy and global musical feel, ‘Mayya Mayya’ stood out as one of the most celebrated tracks of the film.

8/10

‘Ya Ali’ from Gangster (2006)

Few Bollywood songs carry the same mystical pull as ‘Ya Ali’. With its Arabic-inspired melody and Sufi undertones, the track achieved a deeply emotional and spiritual resonance. Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut’s intense romance added soul to the composition. Even today, ‘Ya Ali’ remains one of the most haunting and beloved romantic songs of the 2000s.

9/10

‘Kaho Na Kaho’ from Murder (2004)

Adapted from an Arabic original by Egyptian superstar Amr Diab, ‘Kaho Na Kaho’ introduced mainstream Bollywood audiences to a direct Arabic melody for the first time. Sung by Amir Jamal, the song retained its Middle Eastern essence while fitting perfectly into the dark, romantic mood of Murder. Featuring Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat, it became an instant chartbuster and remains one of Bollywood’s most memorable Arabic adaptations.

10/10

‘Mehbooba’ from Sholay (1975)

Decades before Arabic fusion became a trend, R.D. Burman introduced Middle Eastern rhythms to Bollywood through ‘Mehbooba Mehbooba’. Featuring Helen’s iconic cabaret performance, the song captivated audiences with its exotic beats and hypnotic progression. It remains one of the earliest and most legendary examples of Arabic musical influence in Hindi cinema.
