Mithun Was Briefly Involved with the Naxalite Movement

Before fame found him, Mithun Chakraborty was drawn to the Naxalite movement during his youth in West Bengal in the late 1960s and early 70s — a time of intense political unrest. Influenced by revolutionary ideals and the desire for social justice, he got involved with radical groups that challenged the establishment.

2/5

He Was Deeply Influenced by Leftist Ideology

Growing up in Bengal, where leftist thought was deeply embedded in the intellectual and political climate, Mithun was said to have been ideologically influenced by Marxist and Maoist thought. Like many students of that era, he was moved by the plight of the underprivileged and became emotionally invested in the cause.

A Personal Tragedy Forced Him to Leave the Movement

Mithun’s turning point came with the tragic death of his brother, who was allegedly caught in the crossfire of political violence. This loss deeply affected Mithun and led him to rethink his life choices. He gradually distanced himself from the Naxalite movement, choosing a different path.

4/5

He Disappeared for a While Before Re-Emerging as a Film Student

After leaving the movement, Mithun went underground for a short period and later resurfaced at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. It was here that he reinvented himself, leaving behind the political underground to focus on cinema and storytelling.

5/5

He Rarely Speaks About That Chapter Publicly

Despite being one of the most well-known actors in India, Mithun has remained guarded about his Naxalite past, only referencing it briefly in select interviews. His silence is often seen as a mix of personal pain and a desire to focus on the future rather than relive a turbulent past.
