Dadasaheb Phalke winner Mithun Chakraborty recalls his struggles; says, had slept on roads and had no money for food
Mithun Chakraborty, the name is synonymous with not just sheer talent but persistence, hard work, and consistency. Thus, when today the legendary actor was conferred with the honor of the Dadasaheb Phalke award, it didn’t come as a surprise, it came as a wave of happiness as the star got his well-deserved recognition.
Those who know Mithun, know for a fact that he had his fair share of struggles. However, certain pages of his story are simply too hard-hitting to digest. Speaking to News18, the actor recounted the endless nights he spent under the stars, not knowing what the next morning would bring for him. There was even a time when he was honored with the National Award and yet, he didn’t have money to buy food.
“I started from the roads, spending countless nights under the night sky. Initially, I worked in C-grade films and then moved to B-grade. When I got my first National Award, a journalist approached me for an interview. I told him I was hungry as I didn’t have money to buy food and he was kind enough to get me something to eat,” said the actor.
He continued, “Today, I get food four times. I have seen many ups and downs in my life but passion for the craft and struggle are my weapons.”
Humbled by his journey, Mithun dedicated his award to his fans and family. He said people who watched his films made him what he is today. At the same time, he cannot ignore how his family stood by him through thick and thin.
Overwhelmed with emotions he added, “I have no words to thank everybody. I feel like neither can I laugh, nor can I cry. I still remember how once I slept on Mumbai’s footpaths. I had to fight for everything. Today, as I am being given this honour, I still can’t believe it.”
During this moment of pride, the actor received wishes and congratulatory messages from everyone. One of the messages that stood out came from the Prime Minister of India and Mithun in return thanked him and sent his ‘pranam’ to the PM.
