Bollywood movies adapted from foreign films

The Bollywood film industry has witnessed a whirlwind of change in the pattern of films, as the content is proving to be king. Interestingly, the successes have witnessed an underlying trend of international hits being remade in Hindi cinema and not only winning over the audience but also the box office. Retelling stories that strike a chord with the audience, Bollywood has taken leaves from the international markets offering pieces of excellence and eyeing strong content.

With the Salman Khan starrer 'Bharat' as the latest addition to this grown list of adapted films, we take a look at the many other films that sought inspiration elsewhere.

'Andhadhun'

Sriram Raghavan's 'Andhadhun' starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu and Radhika Apte has emerged as one of the best thrillers of Bollywood. The film that had some path-breaking content, not only drew in the masses but also made a splash at the box office. The black comedy crime thriller left everyone pleasantly surprised with many the hailing it for its content.

The film, however, is partly inspired by a French short film ‘The Piano Turner’ for which director Sriram Raghavan acquired the rights.

3/6

'Badla'

Another crime drama that gripped the audience was the Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu starrer 'Badla'. The film directed by Sujoy Ghosh left the audience at the edge of their seats with its intriguing twists and turns that bound its engaging narrative.

The film required the rights of the Spanish thriller 'The Invisible Guest' to adapt the story for the Indian audience.

4/6

'Bharat'

'Bharat', the Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, may have a very patriotic undertone to it, but this film is based on a Korean drama 'An Ode To My Father'. The film's trailer, songs and promotional material has only seemed to have heightened the excitement surrounding the film. That, coupled with the ensemble cast and the Salman-Katrina pairing is proving to already be a money spinner as it gears up for its release on Eid 2019.

5/6

'Dil Bechara'

Originally titled ‘Kizie Aur Manny’, the upcoming film 'Dil Bechara', starring Sushant Singh Rajput alongside debutante Sanjana Sanghi will delve into the romance genre and present the audience with a heartwarming story of young lovers. Although much about the film has been kept under wraps, it has is a known fact that the film is a remake of the Hollywood hit, ‘The Fault in our Stars’.

6/6

'The Girl On The Train' remake

Actress Parineeti Chopra has been roped in for the Hindi remake of the popular Hollywood thriller 'The Girl On The Train'. According to reports, the remake has not been officially titled yet. The film is expected to go on floors in the UK this July. The upcoming film will be directed by Ribhu Dasgupta and produced by Reliance Entertainment and Amblin Entertainment. The makers of the film are eyeing a 2020 release.
