Baghban

The 2003 classic Baghban (see photo 1) portrays the emotional struggle of parents, played by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini, who sacrifice everything for their children only to be neglected in their later years. The film highlights the importance of respect, gratitude and love towards parents, while also celebrating the unwavering bond between husband and wife. Its moving dialogues and powerful performances continue to resonate with audiences today.

Hum Saath Saath Hain

Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999) (see photo 2) is a celebration of unity, relationships and festive spirit within a joint family. With Reema Lagoo as the matriarch and stars like Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Karisma Kapoor, the film emphasises values of sacrifice, acceptance and the joy of being together. It became a cultural symbol of Indian families celebrating love, duty and traditions.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) (see photo 3) explores the complexities of modern relationships, marriage and infidelity while still underlining the importance of honesty and emotional fulfilment in family life. Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta bring depth to their roles, portraying the challenges of balancing personal happiness with family expectations. The film broke away from conventional storytelling to present a thought-provoking perspective on relationships.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Few films capture family grandeur and sentiment like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) (see photo 4). With a star-studded cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Amitabh Bachchan, it delves into generational conflicts, love across social classes and the ultimate power of forgiveness. Iconic scenes of reunion and emotional confrontations continue to be etched in Bollywood history as reminders of family love’s triumph.

Vivah

Vivah (2006) (see photo 5), starring Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao, is a tender love story rooted in Indian traditions. The film beautifully showcases how relationships extend beyond couples to families, as acceptance, care and unconditional love guide the journey from engagement to marriage. It reflects purity, resilience and the support systems that families provide during both joyous and testing times.
