Amitabh Bachchan's first girlfriend worked at British Airways, here's why the actor broke up with her before he met Jaya Bachchan
Amitabh Bachchan is called a living legend for his long filmography and on-screen aura which has remained unparalleled over the years. His long list of iconic movies is proof of his work and inimitable presence in Hindi cinema. However, apart from his work, his personal life has often interested people. Bachchan got his surname from his father, poet Harivanshrai Bachchan's pen name. While, Big B is married to Jaya Bachchan for about five decades and also had many link-up rumours in his younger days, did you know that his first girlfriend worked at British Airways.
Renowned author and film historian, Hanif Zaveri spoke about it in a podcast, 'Meri Saheli' that his first affair was with a woman named Maya who worked for British Airways. He added that Bachchan's romance began with her in Kolkata when he was working there for a company. He had fallen deeply in love with Maya. But later, Big B went to Mumbai to pursue his acting career and stayed with his uncle in a Bungalow. Hanif said that Maya visited him regularly and her visits didn't go down well with his uncle. He had a fear that his mother, Teji Bachchan would find out about Maya.
The author added, Maya was very bold and openly flirted with Amitabh, which made him uncomfortable. When Amitabh shared his concern with actor, Mehmood’s brother, Anwar Ali, who was working with him in his debut film, 'Saat Hindustani'. he asked him to part ways with Maya. Anwar had told Bachchan, "You won’t be able to spend your life with Maya. It will be difficult for her to fit into the Bachchan family, and as you move forward, more problems will arise'.”
Thus, Big B broke up with Maya, according to Hanif. Meanwhile, he later met Jaya Bachchan in 1970 at the Pune Film Institute. They started developing feelings for each other when they worked together during 'Ek Nazar'. They tied the knot in 1973 after the release of 'Zanjeer'.
