To be fair, new releases 'Ramaiya Vastavaiya' and 'D-Day' managed to keep their head above the water in their opening weekend. 'Ramaiya'... got a fair opening in single screens and 'D-Day' got its due in very select multiplexes. But neither of the two releases were actually prepared for the impact ofBhaag Milkha Bhaag that raced past them even in its second weekend. Both Ramaiya... and D-Day were made in the range of 22-25 crore
, with Prints and Advertising (P&A) budgets of nearly 10 crore
each. The makers of Ramaiya... sent out 15.30 crore
as their three-day collection figure. Trade consultant AmodMehra
said, “
Ramaiya... may break even. Whether or not D-Day recovers its investment will be known only in the coming days.” Also, both films are still to close their satellite deals. However, the trade warns, what is detrimental to their well-being in the theatres is the fact that the marquee will be bursting on July 26. As many as seven Bollywood and Hollywood movies are slated for release this Friday. And the weaker players will definitely suffer from asphyxiation.
The third release of this week, the internationally-acclaimed Ship Of Theseus, got a lot of critical acclaim even from the local media, but could not keep sail at the box office because of the restricted nature of its content, which is for the more astute and intellectual.Revenue earned from India theatrical after deducting tax Ramaiya Vastavaiya (3 days)
