A tribute to the legend Salil Chowdhury on his 93rd birth anniversary

’s contribution to Indian music is no secret. But to make his 93rd birth anniversary a bit special for Kolkatans, his only directorial work, Pinjre Ke Panchi, was screened at Nandan III recently. From musicians who worked with him to his friends and family members — everyone remembered the legend by sharing anecdotes and experiences of working with him.
“After the World War II and Partition, a group of youngsters emerged with big dreams to change the society. Salilda was one of them,” said director Goutam Ghose.

“While Antara (Chowdhury, daughter of Salil Chowdhury) mentioned that this is his only film, Salilda’s relationship with cinema was strong. He, along with Mrinal Sen, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Ritwik Ghatak and others, used to take part in addas that revolved around world cinema,” he added.


Prosenjit Chatterjee, who was present at the do, said, “My father rendered songs composed by him.”
Responding to Antara’s request of celebrating the legend’s birthday with a festival, the actor added, “Definitely, we must try and do something together.”
