It’s a curtain call: Sania Mirza bids adieu to tennis with ‘happy tears’

Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza bid adieu to her career where it all began in Hyderabad. With happy tears in her eyes, she said, “The greatest honour for me has been to play for my country for 20 years. It is every athlete’s dream to represent their country at the highest level, I was able to do that. These are very, very happy tears. I could not have asked for a better send-off.”

Sania played two exhibition fixture matches at Lal Bahadur Tennis Stadium in the city. The first was rounders match between two teams led by Sania and Rohan Bopanna. The second a mixed doubles between Sania-Bopanna and Ivan Dodig-Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Her son Izhaan, Telangana minister KT Rama Rao, actor Dulquer Salmaan, rapper MC Stan, ex-cricketer Yuvraj Singh and fans turned up in support.
