This installation is a tribute to the ocean and the eternal sari

Over 60 women, draped in colourful saris posed for a performance installation created by artist Subodh Kerkar at Morjim beach on Sunday. The installation called Naari in Saree talks about the ocean, and the artist’s deep connection to it. “I believe that the ocean is a creator of cultures, when the waves break on the shore, they create imagination, ideas and thoughts. I have a deep connection with the ocean; and I wanted to create something special with women. So, I thought of creating this with women and the sari. Women always have a deep connection with saris, and it is an important piece of clothing in India, so I decided to work with it,” says Subodh.

He thus, called upon women from different age groups and places to be a part of the installation. “We had women from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur who came for this installation. We had posted about it on several social media platforms, but even though it was out for only a short time – a span of few hours, we got a lot of women wanting to be a part of the installation. Despite the rains the previous day, around 60 women came here,” says Subodh.
