With Durga Puja starting today, the Bengali community in Goa is set to celebrate with great pomp. As in most Indian festivities, the clothes play an integral part, and women are meticulously picking their outfits for each day of the Puja.

The sari is the apparel of choice for most – the traditional taant saris in white and red, or fashionable options like tussar, baluchari and others.

“I will mostly wear silk saris. But on the day of visarjan, we wear white saris with a red border,” says Priyanka Baidya.

Her friend, Panaji-based Sharmistha Das Nandi has a special sari she picked up in Santiniketan. “It is a khesh weave, and is made from scrap and recycled cotton saris,” she tells us.
