Tihar Jail’s inmates are treading the reformatory path. One of the Jail’s initiatives, which involves selling of products made by the inmates, has now taken the form of a shop in the Delhi High Court complex. The authorities recently opened this new outlet, which is the third outside Tihar premises. Present at the occasion were acting chief justice Madan B Lokur, justice Vipin Sanghi, justice JR Mirdha, secretary (Law), Government of Delhi, ML Mehta, president, Delhi HC Bar Association, AS Chandhoke, DG (Prisons) VK Gupta, Shashi with designer daughter Sanjana Jon, and a few of Sanjana’s friends.
Lokur inaugurated the outlet selling TJ products, which will be run by Jaspal Singh, who was recently released from the prison. Named as shop no.13, it will sell cotton shirts, biscuits and other snacks, all prepared by Tihar inmates. CR Garg, DIG (Prisons), said, “We’re convinced that Jaspal will do well, and we will further provide such an opportunity to many more.” He enlisted a number of initiatives being undertaken by Tihar administration, and said, “Bharti foundation has expressed willingness to stitch almost a thousand uniforms for Tihar, and several NGOs have extended their hand for computer training at the premises.” Rajesh Goyal, superintendent, Jail No. 2, Tihar Jail, added, “We will soon have a furniture unit, and a tie-up with Delhi Khadi Board.”
Sanjana walked in a bit late, but was quite excited. “Prisoners here are keen to learn fast and be a part of the social mainstream. They are doing well and are earning a decent livelihood out of it. It would be great if they can play a constructive role in the society,” she said. All said and done, we turned to Jaspal, and asked how it feels after getting his own shop, and he answered with a smile, “Badhiya hai jee.” Tihar authorities plan to open outlets at many court complexes in the city.
