Stories of tribes and joy at Theatre Olympics

On the fourth day of 8th Theatre Olympics, Odia play

Nian

and Italian play

La Gioia

were staged at Bharat Bhawan and

Ravindra Bhawan

respectively. La Gioia drew inspiration from Russian writer Leo Tolstoy’s novel ‘The death of

Ivan Ilych

’. In this play, the protagonist is a writer who walks down his memory lane and thinks about all the joyous moments that he has to spend and then suddenly his joy turns into pain when reality strikes him that every one whom he loved was dead.

Odia play Nian focused on the loopholes of the government sector. Directed by

Subodh Patnaik

the play is about a woman Saunri whose husband is shot dead as the officers thought that he was a militant. Then she starts working as a labourer where she is physically exploited by the contractor. She is then supported by the Maoists for whom she dedicates her life. Apart from polished theatre artists, ten tribal people too were a part of this play whose performance was exemplary.
