IITGN members enjoys a farm tour

Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) staff members and their family enjoyed a day close to nature at the Institute’s own

organic farm

on the

campus

. More than 170 faculty, staff and project staff members were a part of this tour. The Organic Farm Team of IITGN had organised an organic

farm tour

and village-style lunch for the IITGN community recently complete with a variety of recreational activities like pottery and mehndi.
The

community members

were delighted to learn about the variety of vegetables and crops grown, hear about some farming practices, and experience this unique community farming initiative. This was followed by a village-style lunch in the natural environs of the farm, which was prepared with fresh veggies of the organic farm giving a touch of Gujarati flavour (Bajra no rotlo, shaak, with lasan ni chatni and athela marcha). IITGN community members had a refreshing break with their children and family members.
The IITGN organic farm grows many varieties of vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, brinjal, potato, cucumber, bottle gourd, ladyfinger, spinach, fenugreek, carrot, beetroot, cluster beans, long beans, chilies, green garlic, green tuver, coriander etc. and special vegetables like broccoli, kale, zucchini, lettuce, pumpkin, and so on. Farm activities are being expanded by growing millets and wheat. It uses only completely organic fertilisers for growing various crops. Community members can participate in the volunteer programme on every Saturday to contribute to the organic farm activities. The community members can buy the community organic farm produces every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.
