One of Holland’s most promising young producers, Sandro Silva is all of 22 but already has the support of EDM biggies Laidback Luke, David Guetta and Tiësto. His breakthrough came when his single Prom Night was featured on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection show. Epic, his collaboration with Quintino, grabbed over 15 million views online, hitting platinum in Holland and gold in Belgium.
“This track got me noticed,” he tells Bombay Times over the phone from Holland. This spunky Dutchman has already played at the world’s most high profile electronic music festivals and is now all set to tour India this month, with gigs in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
“I started deejaying in 2006 when I was 15,” he says. The depth in his signature broad, melodious sound probably comes from years of piano study. “Knowing how to play an instrument helped me pick up electronic faster,” says Silva, whose real name is Shandro Jahangier.
Apart from his own projects, he is also a skilled remixer; he has remixed for the likes of Pitbull, Ricky Blaze, Laidback Luke and Calvin Harris. “In fact, it is because of Luke's support that I was able to develop my production skills at a rapid pace,” he says. Although his early tinkering with the console and DJing software was heavily based on trance, his sound has since become more progressive, house and tech influenced. “Melody still reigns supreme, though,” he says.
Silva is excited about his maiden trip to India. “I love to travel and I love Bollywood music; it’s so flashy. I've seen Bollywood movies since there are a lot of Indian people in my city; I like how there is so much dancing in them,” he says.
Although a slew of EDM artists have released their debut studio albums in the past few months, Silva is happy releasing singles and playing live. He says, “I am in no hurry to cut a record yet! I thrive on the moment when I get direct feedback from the direction of the crowd.”
