Singer Solange Knowles has dedicated her new album '

A Seat at the Table

' to her mother and father. The 30-year-old sister of Beyonce said she wanted to express the intricate layers of family history, Black culture and womanhood through her songs, reported

tackles her search for peace and growth 'in the face of condescension, lies, aggression, violence and murder.'

"I'm a strong believer that in order to know where you're going, you have to know where you came from. I think that I chose (to record in) New Iberia based on that area being the start of everything within our family's lineage," she added.

Her mother Tina Lawson interviewed her about the album and asked if she was afraid of being labeled an 'angry Black woman'. 'A Seat at the Table' is Knowles' fourth studio effort.

"We grew up in a household with two parents who constantly celebrated Blackness and created forums and spaces to empower Black communities. This might feel new for other people, but it is surely not new for me," Knowles said.
