The Star Wars series are divided into three segments – Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy. Director and producer George Lucas came up with the first Star Wars movie in 1977. The film was titled Star Wars but it was later titled Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope after the trilogy division. It starred Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. The film went on to become one of the biggest box office successes of that era.

With the super success of the first film, making the second one, which released in 1980, didn’t come as a surprise. Titled Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones, the film carried forwarded the cast of Hamill, Ford and Fisher. But this time, Irvin Kershner handled the direction while Lucas continued as a producer. The franchise continued with the third film, Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi three years later, which was helmed by Richard Marquand.

Star Wars returned after 16 years with Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in 1999. Lucas decided to make this film after he was satisfied with the special effects advancement in cinema. It had a fresh cast of Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and others. Two more films followed in 2002 and 2005 – Star Wars: Attack Of The Closes and Star Wars Revenge Of The Sith. Neeson wasn’t a part of these two films since his character dies in the first.

After a hiatus of 10 years, Star Wars is back with the sequel series of the franchise. The first of the three films is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is directed by Lawrence Kasdan and J. J. Abrams and Michael Arndt. It brings back the cast of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher after 32 years. But from this film onwards, Lucas won’t be associated with Star Wars. Two more films in the franchise will be releasing in 2017 and 2019.

Now, time for some trivia:-

• It is said that Lucas himself had once stated that the first Star Wars movie was loosely inspired from the 1958 Japanese movie, The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa.

• Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars movie to not release in the month of May.

• It is also the first film that won’t be distributed by 20th Century Fox. The responsibility will be handled by Walt Disney henceforth.

• Star Wars is also made into TV film, series and animated series.
