Oscars 2016: Full list of winners

After raising the temperature with some fabulously hot appearances on the red carpet, the main event of the 88th Academy Awards started off on a high note. And host Chris Rock made sure that it’s a night you do not easily forget with his snarky pot shots at the “White Oscar” controversy. With Rock’s digs and the some really touching performances by Sam Smith and The Weekend and awards being received by some of our favourite celebs, the night turned out to be an entertainment extravaganza.

Best Film

What came as no surprise to anyone, Tom McCarthy’s biographical drama, ‘Spotlight’ won the highly competitive race for the Best Film at the Oscars. It was pitted against 7 others including ‘The Big Short,’ ‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘Brooklyn,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Room.’ What was surprising though, was the fact that ‘Brooklyn’ won no awards.

Best Actor in a lead a Role

One of the biggest highlights of the event was the announcement of the Best Actor award. And after waiting for bated breath, Leonardo DiCaprio fans were in for a huge treat… The actor finally won the award for his critically acclaimed film, ‘The Revenant.’ This was the sixth year in a row that DiCaprio was nominated and marked his first Oscar victory.

Best Actress in a Lead Role

Taking home the ‘Best Actress’ trophy was Brie Larson, the girl who impressed us all with her unmatchable portrayal of ‘Maa’ in Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room.’ Turns out audiences and critic weren’t the only ones she impressed, the actress sure floored the Academy too. Brie was competing with Cate Blanchett (Carol), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn).

Best Directing

Known for being one of the most temperamental and strict directors, Alejandro G. Inarritu, sure reaped the fruits of his hard work. The filmmaker won the ‘Best Director’ award for ‘The Revenant.’ The director was competing with Lenny Abrahamson (Room), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight) and Adam McKey (The Big Short).

Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Given that this is the Oscars we are looking at there was no doubt that we’d only come across the most talented lot in the nominated list. Accordingly the nominations included Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs). And the one to grab the award was Alicia, very deservingly so!

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

For his outstanding portrayal of Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg’s ‘Bridges of Spies,’ actor Mark Rylance was awarded with the Best Supporting Actor trophy. The 56-year old, who garnered a lot of appreciation for breathing life in his character, was nominated alongside Christian Bale (The Big Short), Tom Hardy (The Revenant) Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed).

Best Music (Original Song)

Though it is very less likely, but even if you aren’t a James Bond fan and even if you did not appreciate the musical merit of ‘Writing on a wall’ in Spectre, Sam Smith would have absolutely floored you with his live rendition of the song at the Academy Award event. No wonder the musician, along with his partner, Jimmy Napes, won the ‘Best Song’ award for it. Others songs in the running were ‘Earned It’ from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ ‘Manta Ray’ from ‘Racing Extinction,’ ‘Simple Song #3’ from ‘Youth’ and ‘Til It Happens To You’ from ‘The Hunting Ground.’

Best Music (Original Score)

Compiling the best yet again, the Oscar nominations for ‘Best Score’ category included ‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘Carol,’ ‘The Hateful Eight,’ ‘Sicario’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ And Ennio Morricone was the lucky winner for his nail-bitingly amazingly score for 'The Hateful Eight.' From fear to anxiety to a firing rage, Ennio’s music gave us a lot of experiences.

Best Animated Feature Film

Remember that cute little film about how the inside of our heads work while we are growing up? Yeah, the same one that made you laugh out loud and shed a few silent tears too! That awesome animated film, ‘Inside Out,’ seems to have did not just bowl you over, it also won the Academy Award for The Best Animated Feature Film. Obviously, creators Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera were on top of the world with their victory over ‘Anomalisa,’ ‘Boy and the World,’ ‘Shaun the Sheep Movie’ and ‘When Marnie Was There.’

Best Short Film (Animated)

Coming to more animated stories, let’s not forget the shorter ones. Winning the award for ‘Best Short Annimation Film’ were Gabriel Osorio and Pato Escala for their remarkable creation we know as 'Bear Story.' The film beat ‘Prologue,’ ‘Sanjay’s Super Team,’ ‘We Can’t Live without Cosmos,’ and ‘World of Tomorrow’

Best Short Film (Live Action)

Nominees in this category included ‘Ave Maria,’ ‘Day One,’ ‘Everything Will Be Okay (Alles Wird Gut),’ ‘Shok’ and ‘Stutterer.’ While all films are great works of art, it was Irish director, Benjamin Cleary’s ‘Stutterer’ that took home the coveted award. Benjamin received the trophy with co-director, Serena Amitage at the event.

Best Foreign Language Film

Honouring cinema worldwide is what the Academy aims at. Accordingly in its prestigious ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category, the Academy felicitated a Hungarian film, ‘Son Of Saul’ directed by László Nemes. Other films to be nominated in the category were ‘Embrace of the Serpent,’ ‘Mustang,’ ‘Theeb’ and ‘A War.’

The nominees under this category included films like ‘Spotlight,’ ‘Bridge Of Spies,’ ‘Ex Machina,’ ‘Staright Outta Compton’ and ‘Inside Out.’ It was a tough call, but the trophy went to Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer for their brilliant writing in ‘Spotlight.’ No surprises there! The two gave quick thank-yous to the whole team.

Best Documentary (Feature)

Apart from Priyanka Chopra presenting, there was another proud moment for India at the Academy Awards… Asif Kapadia, a British Filmmaker of Indian origin, winning the ‘Best Documentary’ award ‘Amy,’ based on the life of British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. Kapadia received the award along with producer James Gay-Rees. Pitting against ‘Amy’ were ‘Cartel Land,’ ‘The Look of Silence,’ ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’ and ‘Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom.’

Best Documentary (Short Subject)

Pakistani journalist and filmmaker, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was the proud owner of the coveted golden lady for the second time for her short documentary film, 'A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness.' The film received immense appreciation for bringing out the harsh realities of the regressive social and judicial systems in the country. Others nominated in the category were ‘Body Team 12,’ ‘Chau, Beyond the Lines,’ ‘Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah’ and ‘Last Day of Freedom.’

Best Costume Design

Nominated in this category were Carol, Cinderella, The Danish Girl, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant and the winner turned out to be ‘Mad Max’ designer, Jenny Beavan. Jerry was the first of the many from ‘Mad Max’ team to bag an Oscar. This one was the start of the long streak of awards that film was to bag in the coming moments.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Winning its third trophy in a row, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ struck yet again in the best makeup and hairstyling category. Lesley Vanderwalt, Benicio Del Toro and Jennifer Garner became the proud owners of the golden lady. With this win, ‘Mad Max’ defeated ‘The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared’ and ‘The Revenant’ that were also nominated in the category.

Alejandro G. Inarritu’s ‘The Revenant’ was lucky for more than just him (won Best Director) and Leonardo (won Best Actor); the film also brought Emmanuel Lubezki’s his third trophy for ‘Best Cinematography.’ The film beat other nominees that included ‘Carol,’ ‘The Hateful Eight,’ ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and ‘Sicario.’

Best Film Editing

While the award in itself is a prestige to rejoice, what made it particularly special to every Indian was the fact that it was presented by Priyanka Chopra, who became the first Indian to have presented at the Oscars. The trophy was won by Margaret Sixel for 'Mad Max: Fury Road' making it the fourth of the six award the film took home. Other nominations in this category were, ‘The Big Short,’ ‘The Revenant,’ ‘Spotlight’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’

Best Sound Editing

No sooner were the nominations announced than the audience predicted the winner. After four victories, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ won yet another award for ‘Best Sound Editing.’ Editors Mark Mangini and David White received the award amidst a lot of hooting and cheering. ‘The Martian,’ ‘The Revenant,’ ‘Sicario’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ also made it into the nominations’ list.

Best Sound Mixing

'Mad Max: Fury Road' seemed to be on a roll! The George Miller directorial earned its sixth award for the night through Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff and Ben Osmo for ‘Best Sound Mixing.’ The film faced a tough completion from ‘Bridge of Spies,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ that were also nominated in the same category.

Best Visual Effects

Winning the trophy for the ‘Best Visual Effects’ were VFX artists Andrew Whitehurst, Paul Norris, Mark Ardington and Sara Bennett for their fabulous work on Alex Garland’s ‘Ex Machina.’ The film beat some really tough runners like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘The Revenant’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ that were pitted against ‘Ex Machina.’
