Jason Momoa has stepped away from 'Helldivers,' the upcoming video game adaptation directed by
Justin Lin. The film remains dated for Nov. 10, 2027, but the team is now looking for a new lead star and other cast members. No reason has been given for Momoa’s exit from the sci-fi action project, which is based on the popular shooter-style game franchise from Arrowhead Game Studios.
Jason Momoa exits 'Helldivers' movie
According to Variety, Momoa’s casting in 'Helldivers' was first announced in February. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, which are backing the film, are now moving ahead with a search for a replacement and the rest of the cast.
The game follows “an elite unit of soldiers” known as “Helldivers.” They fight alien creatures that threaten to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth. Further plot details for the film have not been shared yet.
Justin Lin is directing the adaptation. Hutch Parker is producing with Asad Qizilbash. Lin is also producing through Perfect Storm Entertainment.
'Helldivers' adaptation moves ahead
The film comes as video game adaptations continue to draw strong interest from studios and viewers. The 2022 film 'Uncharted,' starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, earned USD 407 million worldwide.
Other game-based titles tied to the same larger screen push include Peacock’s 'Twisted Metal' series and HBO’s 'The Last of Us.'
'Helldivers' was first released in 2015 by Arrowhead Game Studios. A sequel, 'Helldivers 2,' followed in 2024. The property has enough material for future films if the first movie performs well.
Momoa still has several projects lined up after leaving 'Helldivers.' His slate includes 'A Minecraft Movie: Squared,' the follow-up to his hit 'Minecraft,' along with the live-action animation hybrid 'Animal Friends,' 'Fast Forever,' and 'Protecting Jared.'
He will also appear in major franchise films this year. Momoa is set to star in 'Street Fighter' as Blanka, described in the material as “the feral savage Blanka.” He will also return as Duncan Idaho in 'Dune: Part 3' and play Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter, in 'Supergirl.'
The casting search now becomes the next key step for 'Helldivers' as the film works toward its 2027 release.
