Hollywood blockbusters that were a 'rip-off' of Anime films

Anime, a genre that found its way into the hearts of audiences around the world relatively recently, has served as an 'inspiration' for Hollywood filmmakers for decades, and even earning them a spot among the greats. Over the years, several anime films have not only captivated viewers with their unique storytelling but have also inspired retellings and adaptations into some of Hollywood's most iconic films. Here's a closer look at some Oscar-winning films and other major blockbusters that drew inspiration from the world of anime.

The Lion King - Kimba The White Lion

Osamu Tezuka's groundbreaking manga "Kimba The White Lion," which made its debut in the 1950s and later received an animated adaptation in the 1960s, is an international animation landmark. However, Disney's "The Lion King" (1994) has faced controversy for its striking similarities to the anime. From eerily identical scenes to character names reminiscent of each other, the two tales share uncanny resemblances. This led to intense scrutiny and debates, although Disney maintained the originality of its projects.

Avatar - Castle in the Sky

James Cameron's "Avatar" (2009) set records at the box office, immersing audiences in a visually stunning world filled with unique flora, fauna, and the indigenous Na'vi. The film's stnning visuals and powerful environmental themes resonated with global audiences, propelling it to over $5 billion in worldwide earnings (collective total of 2 films). Interstingly, some of the visulas that made this film stand out, were first seen in the Anime film 'Castle in the Sky'. The uncanny resemblance of both films prompted director Cameron to admit the 'inspiration' behind Avatar's floating mountains in the lush jungle planet of Pandora.

The Matrix - Ghost In The Shell

Both "The Matrix" and "Ghost in The Shell" delve into the realms of consciousness and awakening within intricate cyberpunk worlds. Themes such as life vs. death, nature vs. nurture, and technological dependency are shared elements in these films. Even the directors of the blockbuster franchise admitted that "Ghost in The Shell" served as a significant inspiration for their film.

5/6

Inception - Paprika

Christopher Nolan's mind-bending thriller "Inception" drew inspiration from Satoshi Kon's "Paprika." Both films explore the concept of influencing dreams through machines and feature visually striking scenes. Specific moments in the Leonardo Dicaprio starrer including the famous rotating hallway fight, bear a remarkable resemblance to sequences in "Paprika." Nolan himself has acknowledged the influence of the anime film on his work.

Black Swan - Perfect Blue

"Perfect Blue" and "Black Swan" share thematic parallels, with both films exploring the psychological turmoil of individuals in competitive professional fields. "Black Swan" director Darren Aronofsky even acquired the film rights to "Perfect Blue" before crafting his own movie. Some scenes in his film mirror those in "Perfect Blue," emphasizing the shared narrative elements and the descent into darkness faced by the protagonists.
