Garfield to Spiderman: A look at classic comic book characters that made it big in Hollywood

From antique strips to Saturday morning animated features to CGI spectacles to blockbuster movie franchises, comic book characters have made their way far afield from the page. Some are modernized reimagines, and others lovingly preserved. In all cases, characters show that a great story and a confident personality can endure generations, genres, and even Geographies. Have a look:

2/6

The Smurfs

This was first introduced in the year 1958 by Belgian artist Peyo, these tiny blue forest dwellers became a global phenomenon through comics and cartoons. Hollywood embraced them with 2011’s hybrid live-action CGI film, which paved the way for a franchise loved by kids and grown-ups alike. The new Smurfs movie, releasing July 18 in English and Hindi, promises fresh villains and a dose of slapstick magic.

3/6

Tintin

A timeless character created by Belgian cartoonist Hergé in 1929, Tintin’s investigative escapades have captivated millions across continents. His leap to cinema came in 2011 through Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s ‘The Adventures of Tintin,’ blending stunning motion-capture visuals with classic storytelling. The film introduced Tintin’s signature mix of courage and curiosity to mainstream global audiences.

4/6

Garfield

Jim Davis’ sarcastic show first purred onto newspaper pages in 1978 and has since become a pop culture staple. Hollywood brought Garfield to life in 2004, voiced by Bill Murray in a performance packed with dry wit and lasagna-loving antics. Despite mixed critical reception, Garfield’s laid-back charm and mass appeal made him a box office success—and he remains a lovable icon for all ages.

5/6

Spider-Man

Since swinging from Marvel's Amazing Fantasy in 1962, Spider-Man has become an absolute cinematic juggernaut. With three separate live-action portrayals by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, the series has taken on everything from teenage angst to multiverse madness. Each reboot adds another layer to Peter Parker's character to accommodate for Hollywood's unquenchable thirst for emotionally grounded superheroes.

6/6

Popeye

Popeye debuted in the comic strip "Thimble Theatre" in 1929, and became emblematic of the strength spinach provides, and its antic charm. His 1980 live action performance by Robin Williams brought some cartoonish flavor to the cinema, but wasn't a box office smash. Nevertheless, amidst a number of redeeming qualities, it gained cult status for the peculiar tone and its realistic portrait of the whimsical world of Popeye with the sailor more firmly standing within Hollywood lore.
