With the
coronavirus continuing to spread globally and claiming the lives of more than 3000 individuals, it has prompted authorities to take the necessary precautions and implement tougher checks to try to bring the situation under control. In India, numerous events from the world of film and television have been postponed or cancelled entirely.
Just last week sweeping travel bans accelerated, walling regions apart as the viral pandemic continued to unfold, even taking a toll on the financial markets that took a nosedive. Amidst widespread confusion and panic over the viral infection first detected three months ago in China, several mind-boggling conspiracy theories have been doing rounds on social media platforms. While some drew references to books that “prophesized” this global viral outbreak to films that depicted a dystopian future crippled by a pandemic. Here’s a list of film that accurately depicted the spread of viruses and other infectious diseases, and no, we are not talking about those zombie apocalypses.
Contagion
Steven Soderbergh's Academy Award-winning 2011 film 'Contagion' has suddenly grabbed everyone's attention as the Coronavirus outbreak continues to spread worldwide. The sci-fi thriller that tracks what happens when a deadly China-born virus goes global and leads to mass chaos as epidemiologists race to find a vaccine has now become the most-watched film online. It was reported that the
Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Jude Law starrer was downloaded by users at an alarming rate. Warner Bros recently announced that the film is currently the most in-demand films after the Harry Potter franchise.
Talking about the same, 'Contagion' screenwriter Scott Z Burns told a news portal that the hysteria surrounding the virus is the reason for the renewed interest in the film. He also added that the similarities between 'Contagion' and the coronavirus are immaterial, accidental, and really not that important.
This 2011 film about the global health scare seems all too familiar in the current scenario, as it shows the impact of misinformation and myths that can be easily spread through technology.
Children of Men Alfonso Cuarón's ‘Children Of Men’ is another film that comes to mind when thinking of a global pandemic that sends the human race to the brink of extinction. Starring Clive Owen, this film puts the magnifying glass on society to see its cracks and how it is on the verge of collapse, especially at a time of a flu pandemic that follows years of widespread infertility. Interestingly, the film almost predicts the collapse of the global economy, borders closing down to outsiders, and people losing faith in humanity as a whole in the face of an outbreak.
The Flu 'The Flu' is touted as the first-ever South Korean disaster film about a viral pandemic. The disaster film tells a story of panic, despair, and desperate struggle for survival of a hopeless city that has been quarantined and essentially left for dead after the outbreak of a deadly virus that kills a person within 36 hours. With its realistic portrayal of the horror and chaos that follows a national-scale disaster.
Outbreak Director Wolfgang Petersen's 1995 film 'Outbreak' looks at the events that follow a viral hemorrhagic disease outbreak in a small American town. Lead by a star-studded cast featuring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Kevin Spacey, the film that tells a story of a medical disaster, of an Ebola-like virus, that infects a town and must be contained before it can spread to the rest of the world. As the scientist race against time to stop it from spreading, a bloodthirsty Army general steps in to try to use the virus as a bioweapon.
Virus The post-apocalyptic action film ‘Virus’ ponders on what would happen if a flu virus wiped out most of society, leaving behind a crumbling nuclear stockpile that could go up at any time. The film’s plot puts out an honest question about what would happen to the world’s deadliest weapons if there was no one equipped to manage them. With no one around to keep a check on these nuclear weapons, it makes us wonder if one disaster could give way to another bigger one.
