Billy Zane is set to portray Marlon Brando in a new biopic, "Waltzing with Brando." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zane shared that the film will briefly reference Brando's role as Jor-El, Superman's father, in the 1978 movie.
Zane mentioned that they recently added a last-minute scene for the end credits, featuring a humorous outtake of Brando from the Superman set. In this outtake, Brando flubs a line, mixing up his character’s son’s name, calling him "Alal, Kal-El, Ralph, whatever your name is," during a dramatic monologue. Zane and the filmmakers found this footage online and decided it was too funny not to include.
The biopic "Waltzing with Brando" is based on a book by Brando’s friend, architect Bernard Judge. Unlike typical biopics that cover a person's entire life, this film focuses on a five-year period during which Brando and Judge worked on sustainable design in Tahiti during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Zane emphasized that this unique approach provides a fresh perspective on Brando's life, highlighting his friendship with Judge and their shared passions for civil rights, indigenous rights, and environmental issues.
Zane found this project appealing because it avoids the conventional biopic structure, which he believes often fails to capture the essence of a person’s life. He expressed his dislike for biopics that attempt to hit all the significant events in someone's life, describing them as false and saccharine. Instead, he was drawn to the contradictions and complexities in Brando’s character, such as being a reclusive figure who couldn’t sleep alone and had many children.
The film's unconventional focus aims to delve deeper into the intriguing aspects of Brando’s personality. Zane shared that "Waltzing with Brando" is nearing completion, with final touches being made to the sound mix. The team is excited to release the film to the public later this year.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zane had also highlighted his fascination with Brando's paradoxical nature. Despite being one of the world's most famous men, Brando retreated to an island, indicating a complex personality full of contradictions.
Overall, "Waltzing with Brando" promises to offer a unique and insightful look at Marlon Brando, focusing on a specific, impactful period of his life rather than attempting to cover his entire biography.
