Bhojpuri cinema has become an important part of the Indian film industry and its popularity has reached a great extent over a period of time. Many big Bollywood stars even worked in Bhojpuri movies and took the film in the list of hits Bhojpuri movies. Some big hits have created history in the cinema, with memorable stories and wonderful performances by stars. Here, Bhojpuri movies that made the headline.

One of the most popular Bhojpuri movies of all time is 'Ganga Dev' which was released in the year 2012. The movie was based on a political drama starring big Bollywood names like Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan as lead characters. Other popular Bhojpuri stars who were roped in for are Dinesh Lal Yadav, Pakhi Hegde, Gulshan Grover and Awadhesh Mishra. The story of the film was written and directed by Abhishek Chhadha, produced by Deepak Sawant.

'Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo' was the first-ever Bhojpuri film released in 1963 directed by Kundan Kumar. The movie stars Kumkum, Ashim Kumar, Helen, Padma Khanna, Sujit Kumar and Nazir Hussain. It had music by Chitragupta, lyrics by Shailendra and songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. The theme is based on widow remarriage and was released on 22 February 1963 at Veena Cinema, Patna.

The Bhojpuri film 'Balam Pardesia' was released in 1979, directed by Nazir Hussain starring Rakesh Pandey and Padma Khanna in lead roles. The songs of the film were popular even in the non-Bhojpuri area. Two famous songs from the film are, 'Gorki Ptarki Re' and 'Chadhte Phalgun', both sung by Mohd Rafi.

'Ganga' is the prequel to the film 'Gangotri' and was released in the year 2006. It was a romance, action and drama which features Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini and Nagma in pivotal roles. It was directed by Abhishek Chhadha and produced by Deepak Sawant. 'Ganga' also stars other popular actors such as Ravi Kishan, Ajal Sharma and Manoj Tiwari.
