When Vidya Balan secretly wrote a letter to Satyajit Ray but couldn’t send it
Vidya Balan had a heartfelt connection with legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. As a teenager, she wrote a letter expressing her admiration for Ray but didn’t have the courage to send it. Sadly, when the news of Ray’s sudden demise reached her, she experienced a deep sense of heartbreak.
In a recent conversation with IANS, Vidya Balan opened up about her desire to collaborate with her favorite filmmaker and how Bengali cinema has influenced her career. She shared, "If I were to write a letter to Mr. Ray today, it would express my wish for him to have lived longer. Even now, I would have loved to work with him. While everyone discusses Ray's masterpieces like 'Pather Panchali' and 'Charulata,' I hold 'Mahanagar' dear to my heart. The film left a profound impact on me. I wish he had lived longer, allowing me the opportunity to work with him repeatedly in multiple films."
Vidya also revealed that many people had mentioned her striking resemblance to a young Madhavi Chatterjee, who portrayed the protagonist in Ray's cult classic ‘Charulata’. She finds this comparison immensely flattering.
However, Vidya's admiration for Ray doesn't stop at mere words. Her passion for his work is displayed throughout her home, adorned with posters of the auteur’s films, including ‘Mahanagar’. She even possesses a captivating painting showcasing characters from his movies. These decorative pieces show her deep love and respect for Bengali cinema and culture.
Interestingly, Vidya's journey into films began with the 2003 Bengali film ‘Bhalo Theko’ before she made her Bollywood debut in 2005 with ‘Parineeta’, which was based on a Bengali novel of the same name. This convergence of Bengali influences and her career path has further strengthened her connection to the rich heritage of Bengali cinema.
Vidya Balan's longing to work with Satyajit Ray and her profound appreciation for his artistic contributions reflect the enduring impact Ray has had on her life and career. Her journey from a teenage admirer to becoming a Bollywood star showcases the transformative power of inspiration and the profound influence of an artist's legacy.
