When Bengali divas went deglam onscreen and totally nailed it!

Cinema is often termed as a world wrapped in glitz and glam. Particularly when it comes to the actresses, they're supposed to appear picture perfect, at least that's what fans expect from them. But time and again, Bengali actresses have gone entirely deglam for their roles, and absolutely nailed it. Have a look at these Tollywood actresses in deglam characters onscreen.

2/6

Jaya Ahsan

Jaya Ahsan put a complete end to all those speculations on social media about how she would pull off the role of Ranu, one of the central characters of the film ‘Debi - Misir Ali Prothombar’ based on Humayun Ahmed’s novel of the same title from his famous Misir Ali series. Her beautiful acting gave life to the role and gave us a look inside of Ranu’s unsettling world. Whenever we see Ranu onscreen, we feel the paranormal and psychological trauma she goes through each day of her life in the novel. Jaya crafted Ranu’s inner demons to perfection.

3/6

Sudiptaa Chakrabarty

Sudiptaa Chakrabarty plays Bindi, an oppressed Bihari wife on the run, in her husband Abhishek Saha’s directorial debut ‘Uronchondi’. It’s quite challenging for the actress to portray a Bihari rural woman as she had to practice a lot to adapt to the Bhojpuri accent of her character. While speaking about her character in ‘uronchondi’, Sudiptaa said she had to be extra cautious during the shoot not deviate from the original dialogue. We all know she can leave any movie buff in awe with her natural expressions alone but she has no such regrets about not being fully explored for her acting skills.

4/6

Rituparna Sengupta

Rituparna Played a simple, middle-class Bengali woman Basundhara in Ranjan Ghosh directed ‘Ahaa Re’ which is a celebration of food, and the love for it. She gives Arifin Shuvoo and Paran Bandopadhyay, the other two lead actors, a run for their money with her mature, restrained performance as Basundhara - a woman whose past grief leaves her to put all her heart and soul into cooking and caring for her family of three. Plus, the almost electric undertones of Farhaz (Arifin) and Basudhara’s love-hate relationship will keep your anticipation high all the way. Seeing Rituparna in such a de-glam role is also visual treat.

5/6

Arpita Chakraborty

If there’s one person on whose able shoulders Arjunn Dutta’s directorial debut ‘Abyakto’ solely rests – it has to be Arpita Chatterjee as Sathi. Putting in a terrific performance that will move you and leave you with a lump of emotion in your throat, she is rude and haughty in one scene, loving and caring in the next – without making the transition seem even the least bit jarring. How has she managed to pull off such a complex role? She is a treat to watch – with her irritability and grit as the young Sathi, her worn out demeanour as the old Sathi, and her ethereal beauty as both.

6/6

Rukmini Maitra

Rukmini plays a young woman called Yasmin who is held hostage by a seemingly decent Bengali guy Abir Chatterjee (Dev) in the disguise of a terrorist. Although the film seems to have got it all wrong as far as good cinema on a serious topic like terrorism is concerned, Rukmini at least seems to have tried her level best with her expressions, bringing a certain amount of toughness to the character even when watching her father held at gunpoint. This adds to the fact that she is no mere girl next door, as projected till then. Being a glamorous diva, slipping into a character without any makeup or glam up quotient is not an easy task. But it’s good to see Rukmini did justice to her character’s appearance.
