Debutante director Pritha Chakraborty’s Mukherjee Dar Bou is making all the right noises. Running houseful across Bengal, the non-clichéd saas-bahu story revolves around the complex and intricate yet caring relationship of a mother and her daughter-in-law. We spoke to a few single screen and multiplex owners and officials about the response the film — produced and
presented by Windows — is receiving.
Here’s what they said:
Navin Chokhani, owner of Navina: After a long time, a Bengali movie’s second-week BO collection is 30% higher than its first week. This is a sign that the film has struck the right chord with its audience. A lot of saas-bahu pairs are turning up to catch the film. Even young couples with their husbands and mothers-in-law are coming to watch. It’s a complete family entertainer and we are hoping the collection will be even better during the extended Holi weekend. The film will surely cross the 50-day mark in theatres.
Pankaj Ladia, Inox official: Despite releasing during the exam season, the film saw a 60-70% occupancy on weekdays and ran houseful on weekends. Till now, it has got the biggest opening in terms of BO collection. I am getting to experience the kind of crowd that we had seen when Belaseshe had released. From 30 to 70-year-olds, everyone’s enjoying the film. The content is making people interested, which is a great motivation for the film’s makers. With exams finally over, we are expecting an even higher turnout now.
Ujjwal Biswas, programming executive, PVR: This film is running very successfully for two weeks now. On weekdays, we’re seeing an 80-85% occupancy and on weekends, it’s even touching the 100% mark. Since the film’s word-of-mouth publicity is very strong, a lot of people are thronging the theatres. We are hopeful that it will be a blockbuster and run for many more weeks.
Manik Banik, owner of Jaya: The film is a complete family entertainer and is running successfully in our theatre. Shows are houseful during weekends and the weekday turnout is pretty decent. Not only mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, but a lot of people are coming to watch it with their entire family. I am sure the film will run in theatres for at least two more weeks or maybe even more.
