Nirupam Dutta’s upcoming film Maharaaj is an experimental take on the underground feature in its contemporary form. The movie is about a strange cook who suddenly appears in the life of a busy couple and disappears.
The film traces the lives of
Rahul and Nandini, a young married couple, living in an apartment at Salt Lake. The working couple are smart at their office jobs but have completely failed to run a smooth healthy life at home.
The usual excuse of not getting enough time for their home has made their lives miserable. Nandini, not having received any cooperation from Rahul, is finally seeking a cook. Rahul as usual tries to justify the situation by considering it as a result of the obvious norm of today's busy world.
One day a cook named Maharaaj appears, taking references of Rahul’s boss. Nandini was hesitant in the beginning to appoint him as the stranger does not seem to look like a housekeeper or a regular cook. Whereas, Rahul found it pretty normal and pushed his opinion on her and appointed Maharaaj immediately. The situation gets altered when Maharaaj starts showing his own stand on various social and practical issues. The healthy friendship became a clash of ego and eventually Maharaaj was fired from his job. This made Nandini very much annoyed with Rahul when she realised her own fault and found herself guilty of insulting Maharaaj.
Rahul was clueless on the entire issue once he got to know that Maharaaj was never sent by his boss. This information was a real shock to Rahul. The night Maharaaj was fired from his job, three bomb blasts were reported in the city later that very same night. It was suspected that some terrorist organisation had been planning for it for a long time and many of their members were actually residing in the city with fake identities. This information made Rahul nervous and insecure regarding Maharaaj.
Nandini was furious and drunk; as she missed her last chance to say sorry to Maharaaj and for which she will have to carry the feeling of guilt forever. Rahul tries to make her understand that Maharaaj must have had some other intention. Otherwise, why would he come with a fake identity? But nothing was enough for Nandini to come over the grief of losing Maharaaj from her life and forever. Nandini was highly intoxicated and her pain was unbearable. In the middle of that night, Nandini meets Maharaaj again in her apartment over a cup of coffee but there was nothing concrete to prove or disprove his existence to others. She realises that she had been elevated to the next level of her life through the journey of the last few months but the existence of Maharaaj remained questionable to the couple forever.
