His previous two short films ‘Meal’ (starring Adil Hussain) and ‘Laali’ (starring Pankaj Tripathi) had fetched accolades in film festivals across the globe. Now, Kolkata boy

Abhiroop Basu

is all geared up to deliver yet another hard-hitting short titled ‘

Gudgudi

’. According to the independent filmmaker, his latest, set against the backdrop of the 2002 Gujarat riots, will remind us why films like these should be made before it’s too late. The 18-minute long short film features Rajshri Deshpande (Sacred Games),

Akash Sinha

(Gangs of Wasseypur, Photograph), Chetan Sharma (Pagglait, Meenakshi Sundareshwar) and Kuldeep Sareen (

Saand Ki Aankh

) in pivotal roles along with Shayree Sarkar.

Satakshi Nandy

and

Madhurima Tarafder

will also be seen in supporting roles.

“I know the title seems to be misleading, especially when the subject is such a serious one but people will understand why the title is Gudgudi once they see the film. It’s a fictional account of the horrors of riots in the most non-apologetic way,” explains Abhiroop adding that ‘Gudgudi’ is inspired by the real-life story of a survivor and how three women survived up against the rioters choosing an unusual path.

The young filmmaker also reveals how the idea of this short struck his mind when the Delhi communal violence stunned the entire nation last year. “I was shocked to see how our history is being slowly altered. This film shows us how our future generation is being taught a misleading history of India when they might know nothing about the Gujarat riots of 2002, we won’t have anything to prove that how our history has been rewritten. We won’t be able to prove that our history has been distorted. It’s really necessary for our future generations to get an idea that such horrors did take place in our history,” shares Abhiroop.

‘Gudgudi’, an Indo-US project bankrolled by Irfan Hydari and Asad Kirmani from the US and Kaveri Mehrotra from Mumbai, has been shot in Kolkata by Archana Ghangrekar and Abhiroop is now getting his film ready for its festival rounds from January next year.
