Dr Sweta is one of the most challenging characters I’ve played: Jaya Ahsan
Actor Jaya Ahsan opened up about portraying the complex character of Dr Sweta Majumdar and reuniting with Ghosal for the film OCD.
Speaking about the film’s subject matter, Jaya highlighted that OCD was conceived well before the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when obsessive-compulsive disorder was rarely discussed in everyday conversations. She pointed out that the film goes beyond the condition itself, also addressing the extremely sensitive and largely unexplored issue of paedophilia in Bengali cinema.
“There was no reference point in our industry for such a character,” Jaya shared, adding that OCD may be the first Bengali film to bring these two difficult themes together in a single narrative.
Elaborating on her role, the actor described Dr Sweta Majumdar as a deeply layered character who challenged her both emotionally and creatively. Although the film was shot after the pandemic—when discussions around OCD became more common—Jaya noted that cinema has still remained largely silent on the subject of paedophilia.
“Sweta was a completely new experience for me,” she said. “Her relationship with her grandmother is one of the most intriguing aspects of the film. It resonated with me on a personal level, as it reflects an emotional foundation from my own childhood.”
Jaya also shed light on the philosophical core of her character, explaining that Dr Sweta’s ideas go beyond physical cleanliness. “She speaks about mental sanity and societal purity—values that, if practiced, can shape a better future for generations,” she said.
Reflecting on her collaboration with Soukarya , Jaya expressed deep trust and admiration for his creative vision. Following their earlier work in Bhootpori, she said she was immediately drawn to OCD after hearing the script narration.
“Soukarya is one of those directors who brings out the best in me,” she remarked. “He adds depth to the narrative and creates something truly special. OCD is no exception.”
