Kabuliwala (1957)

Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s story, Kabuliwala remains a poignant tale of love beyond borders. The film followed the bond between a little girl and an Afghan merchant far from home. Balraj Sahni’s deeply emotional performance made it iconic, reflecting humanity’s universal longing for connection and the innocence of childhood friendships.

2/5

Dahan (1997)

Dahan told the story of courage in the face of social injustice. Inspired by a real-life incident, the film explored sexual harassment and the silence surrounding it. Rituparno Ghosh’s direction earned a National Award, and the film became a defining statement on women’s struggles and resilience in modern Bengali cinema.

3/5

Pratidwandi (1970)

Directed by Satyajit Ray, Pratidwandi captured the turbulence of Kolkata’s youth during the Naxalite era. Through the eyes of Siddhartha, an educated yet unemployed young man, the film highlighted frustration, alienation, and search for identity. Its experimental style, with flashbacks and stark realism, made it a bold and unforgettable cinematic statement.

4/5

Apur Sansar (1959)

Apur Sansar, the final part of Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy, followed Apu’s adulthood and emotional struggles. Soumitra Chatterjee made his unforgettable debut as Apu, and the film introduced Sharmila Tagore. With its themes of love, loss, and resilience, it remains one of the most moving journeys in world cinema.

5/5

Padatik (1973)

Mrinal Sen’s Padatik explored political unrest and individual conscience during a turbulent time in Bengal. It told the story of a young political activist in hiding, questioning ideology and personal choices. The film became a mirror of 1970s Kolkata, blending personal dilemmas with political realities, leaving audiences with lasting questions.
