BENGALURU: In an effort to put the ruling coalition under pressure, over the detention and arrests of right wing activists including journalists in spreading fake news, the opposition BJP has launched a social media campaign called #EmergencyinKarnataka.

On Friday afternoon, the BJP state unit launched the online campaign with the hashtag.

“Dear Karnataka government, random arrest of people in the name of some ridiculed strange act, won't help you. Please focus on governance. And do the needful. #EmergencyInKarnataka,” it read.

The campaign was picked up by all the BJP leaders, who targetted the government for its arrests.

“Karnataka Government @hd_kumaraswamy @MBPatil preaches us about freedom of expression everytime, on the other hand arrests people who voice their opinion. Hypocrisy at its best. #EmergencyInkarnataka@CMofKarnataka” read a tweet by

Karkala

BJP MLA Sunil Kumar.

Further, BJP state

general

secretary C T Ravi also tweeted on the same by alleging that the government was arresting “nationalists” and murdering democracy.

“CONgress - JD (S) Government has brutally murdered Democracy by arresting Nationalists on flimsy reasons. People who attempted to divide Hinduism and Vested Interests who abuse Hindus on a daily basis are roaming free mocking at the Law,” read a tweet by BJP MLA C T Ravi.

Releasing the pictures of four of the six who were arrested, Ajith Shetty Herenge, Shruthi Bellakki, Sharada Diamond and Hemant Kumar, the BJP has posted messages of alleged attack on “freedom of expression” and “misuse of power” by the state government.

By late evening, the “Emergency in Karnataka” hastag was trending on twitter with over 11,000 people tweeting the same.
