Baby also observed that Rahul Gandhi-led Congress, which was supposedly fighting the BJP, was not behaving with required diligence and maturity. “For instance, the party did not show interest in striking an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. Congress in behaving irresponsibly, but the Left parties do not intend to behave in the same manner. Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest Wayanad is a sign of immaturity,” he said.

On why the CPM is contesting limited number of seats, Baby said it showed the commitment of the Left party towards strengthening the anti-fascist forces. “We do not want the anti-BJP votes to be scattered,” he said.

On CPM being part of the proposed secular government to be formed after the elections, he said that depended on the structure of the Lok Sabha after the polls. “The central committee of the party will discuss the concrete situation at that time and arrive at a decision,” Baby said.

He said there would not be any consolidation of minority votes after Rahul Gandhi’s arrival in the poll fray in Kerala because those who were concerned of communal fascism would think why the AICC president was contesting against the Left, which has successfully resisted the communal onslaught in the state.
