CPI accuses Congress for trying to thwart opposition unity

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran here on Thursday accused the Congress party for trying to thwart the unity among opposition parties in the fight against Narendra Modi led BJP government in the Centre.
Interacting with media persons at a meet the press programme, Kanam said the Congress has the responsibility to explain why the Congress president Rahul Gandhi has decided to take on the left in Wayanad.According to him, the candidature of Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad indicated the decadence of the Congress party.
Kanam however refused to answer whether the CPI would support Congress in case of a post poll alliance against BPJ. But said it was for the end of Narendra Modi rule that the CPI and left parties were working for. "There is no point in indulging in deliberations about any post poll alliance at this juncture. Never there had been any consensus on such alliances, before elections, in the national level", he said. The CPI state chief said the alternative alliance against the BJP need not necessarily be a Congress led one . "But it seems that many have mistaken the strength of Congress party. The Congress now you see is not the Congress it used to be. It is only one of the coalition partners in many states. Regional parties are the key contenders most states in the country. There is no sense in the arguments that Congress is the only secular force in the country, though `poor’ minorities believes so", Kanam said.
According to the CPI chief in Kerala, Rahul Gandhi was only one of the UDF candidates the party nominees are fighting in Lok Sabha election in Kerala. Kanam said his party and the left democratic front in Kerala has no worries about the candidature of Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad, but they were only questioning the logic behind Rahul Gandhi taking on the left, instead of BJP.
