People of Gurugram have seen development work by BJP govt, will choose it again: Inderjit
Having won the GurugramLok Sabha seat as a Congress candidate in 2009 and in 2014 as a BJP candidate, Union minister of state for planning and sitting MP Rao Inderjit Singh is eyeing a third term from the constituency in the coming election. Singh says he has represented the people in the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha for almost four decades now and development of south Haryana, especially Gurgaon, has been his priority. In an interview to TOI, Singh gave an account of work done in the last five years, the promises fulfilled, and the challenge that the Muslim-dominated district of Mewat poses to the saffron party. Excerpts from the interview:

How do you rate your last term as the GurugramMP?

In 2014, the people voted for me and the BJP with a hope to see development in the region. I can say with confidence that I made all possible efforts to fulfill the promises made before the elections. With the support of the Union government, I was able to give them AIIMS in Manethi, Rewari; setting up of Real Estate Regulatory Authority (Rera), formation of Gurugram Municipal Development Authority (GMDA), which became functional in January last year.
There were some other promises too, like completion of Dwarka Expressway, extension of metro services and removal of Kherki-Daula toll plaza…

The two projects of Dwarka Expressway and extension of metro are in final stages.
As far as shifting of the toll plaza is concerned, there was opposition related to the site of relocation. The Centre and the state government are working on these projects and hopefully these will be completed in the coming term.
What are you promising your constituency this time?

I have been thinking of implementation of the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution in the 1990s, which confer administrative and financial powers to panchayats and ensures devolution of finances, authority to collect tax and other powers for local bodies at the village, block and district levels. This way, the load on MLAs and MPs will be distributed.

I also have detailed plans to protect the environment, which is a major concern at present. For this, initiatives will be taken to save Aravalis, which are very important for the region, and upgradation of the waste management system in Gurgaon.
Mewat has been a challenge for the saffron party. What do you expect from voters there?

The previous state governments have used Mewat merely as a vote bank, unlike the BJP, which has worked for the betterment of people there. Not just this, the route of the Rs 90,000-crore Delhi-Mumbai expressway mega project has been approved via Mewat. The BJP government not only completed the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway project, but also developed the Nagina-Tijara route and built a college in Ferozepur Jhirka. I will go to people and give them an account of the work done in five years.
Who do you think will be the main rival for the BJP?

This election is a contest between the two major parties - BJP and Congress. The other parties — Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), newly-launched Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) — will not make much of a difference. The people of Gurugramhave seen the development work done by the BJP government and the lack of development during Congress rule; therefore it will not be tough for them to decide whom to support.
