CHANDIGARH: From distribution of money for liquor and campaigning beyond fixed timings, the election department of the Chandigarh administration had received 76 frivolous

complaints

from the day of the election code of conduct came into force till May 14. According to sources, the department had received a total of 141 complaints and after scrutiny only 65 were found to be genuine.

The modal code of conduct monitoring cell had to undertake physical inspection for all complaints received along with the teams of excise, police and other departments of the Chandigarh administration.

“In one of the complaints it was alleged that the liquor vend was illegal, but when we reached there with an excise team we found that the vend licensed and no illegal practice was going on. Similarly, one complaint had stated that campaigning was being done beyond limited period of 10pm, but on-the-spot visit showed nothing of the sorts. We had received many anonymous complaints too,” said an official of the election department.

The department had constituted multiple teams for minutely observing the modal code of conduct violations and the team members were working round-the-clock and submitting reports on daily basis. The department also issued notices to candidates of the BJP, Congress and BSP after getting reports of

poll code

violations. The complaints related to social media was monitored by the department’s medial monitoring cell.
