MEERUT: In the end, the wheel turned full circle for BJP MP Hukum Singh. The author of the Kairana 'exodus' theory on Saturday found that it was his daughter and party candidate Mriganka Singh that voters had thrown out, so to speak, from the constituency.
Kairana, a restive west UP town, figured prominently in political speeches of BJP leaders as they repeated Hukum Singh's contention that there had been a consistent ‘exodus’ of Hindus from the place.
Party president Amit Shah, Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath and a host of others promised to stop the "injustice" if the party came to power. Ironically, even as the BJP swept the entire "riot belt" of west UP, Kairana slipped out of its hands.
Mriganka Singh, the 57-year-old political novice that the BJP put up from Kairana, lost to Nahid Hasan of SP, who polled 98,830 votes against her 77,668 votes.
Kairana had become a poll issue months before the actual declaration of election dates and was aggressively highlighted by the BJP, with the entire narrative being spearheaded by Hukum Singh himself.
But there was a twist in the tale waiting for Hukum Singh. The moment he managed to hoist his daughter up as the candidate from the seat, the party split down the middle, with Anil Kumar, a party veteran from the region, raising the banner of revolt. He later joined RLD along with his supporters and was rewarded with a ticket by Ajit Singh. Although Anil Singh polled just 19,992 votes, the internal party friction sealed the fate of the BJP in the constituency.
Speaking to TOI, Anil Kumar said, “I have not won the election but at least I have been able to downsize the ego of the so called tallest star campaigner of BJP in this region, who despite the massive saffron wave in the state could not even manage a win for his own daughter. We could have won here by a huge margin of more than 30,000."
All through the day, Hukum Singh kept saying that his daughter would win the seat but after declaration of results refused to talk to the media.
