BHOPAL: The residents of Nandia village in Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, known for their historically high voter turnout, have opted to boycott the polling process.
Situated within the confines of the Satpura Tiger Reserve in the district, this decision has raised concern among local and state authorities, prompting action from government officials.
Nandia, part of the Pipariya assembly seat, has gained recognition for its challenging accessibility, requiring voters from neighboring Supdongar and Binora villages to navigate a 6-km trek through rugged terrain to reach the village's polling booth.
Despite enduring such difficulties to exercise their democratic rights, villagers feel neglected and overlooked by elected representatives, who they claim seldom address their needs beyond the election period.
Reports of the boycott surfaced recently, creating a ripple effect within the local administration and the State Election Commission.
Responding to the situation, a team led by Neeraj Kumar Singh, the Collector of Narmadapuram, along with SP Dr Gurkaran Singh, District Panchayat CEO SS Rawat, and Pipariya SDM Santosh Tiwari, made their way to Nandia, located approximately 180 kilometers away from the district headquarters.
Arriving at the remote village late Tuesday evening, the officials engaged in discussions with the villagers, seeking to comprehend their grievances and dissuade them from boycotting the elections. The residents expressed their long-standing frustration with the lack of development despite their consistent participation in the electoral process, leading them to take this drastic step.
The challenging terrain and absence of proper infrastructure, including roads and transportation facilities, have fueled the villagers' discontent. This sentiment was evident through banners and slogans displayed along the route, advocating for their demands and symbolizing their decision to abstain from voting until their concerns are addressed.
In an attempt to mitigate the situation and address the villagers' grievances, Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh and SP Dr Gurkaran Singh convened a meeting near the Nandia Panchayat Bhawan.
During the interaction, the officials assured the villagers that their issues would be earnestly considered and resolved in adherence to electoral guidelines. Collector Singh emphasized the importance of participating in the democratic process, urging the villagers to exercise their voting rights during the scheduled elections on November 17.
Subsequently, a comprehensive inspection of the Nandia area and the polling station was conducted by the officials to ensure adequate arrangements and facilities for voters on the polling day while addressing the concerns raised by the villagers and reaffirming their trust in the democratic process.
