COIMBATORE: A flying squad in Tiruppur district of election-bound Tamil Nadu detained three trucks carrying cash worth Rs 570 crore in the early hours of Saturday.

Election officials said the cash belonged to the State Bank of India (SBI). The trucks were going from Coimbatore to Visakhapatnam when they were intercepted by the flying squad on the Perumanallur- Kunnathur road.

The three trucks were escorted by Andhra Pradesh police personnel who were in plain clothes.

The drivers of the trucks didn't stop the vehicles when the flying tried to stop them. The flying squad chased the vehicles and intercepted them.

Police personnel and SBI officials, who were accompanying the trucks, could not produce valid documents and so the vehicles were taken to Tiruppur collectorate. CRPF personnel were deployed at the district collectorate to guard the cash-laden trucks.

When contacted, Tiruppur collector S Jayanthi said a committee had been formed to sort out the issue. "There are some issues in connection with the seizure. The committee comprising RBI officials, income tax officials and SBI officials will take a decision," she said.
