CHENNAI: Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls on Monday, the Election Commission has seized unaccounted money of over Rs 100 crore in the state since the model code of conduct came into effect on March 4.

The Commission along with other officials, including from Income Tax department, and police has been seizing unaccounted

cash

in various parts of the state.

"Since the Model Code of Conduct came into effect, Rs 73.31 crore has been seized by flying squad and Rs 32.19 crore by Income Tax authorities totaling Rs 105.50 crore," a release from the chief electoral officer, said here.

The Election Commission said it had returned Rs 47.91 crore from the total amount seized after relevant documents were produced, it added.

However, the release did not mention anything about the Rs 570 crore seized in Tiruppur district on Saturday.

Election officers seized the amount from three trucks in the wee hours but State Bank of India later said it was the bank's legitimate cash.

The Income Tax department, meanwhile, today asked the district administration to move the vehicles back to Coimbatore chest of the SBI to execute search warrants.
