Now UP Board Intermediate students can retake one subject to boost marks
Intermediate candidates under the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education will soon be able to improve their marks without retaking the full examination. The board has moved a proposal to introduce an improvement facility in one subject, and it has received formal approval from the government.
The provision will come into effect after the Intermediate results are declared at the end of April. Students who wish to enhance their scores will be allowed to apply for the improvement paper once the result process is completed.
Over 25 lakh students to benefit
A total of 25,76,082 students have registered for this year’s Intermediate examination conducted by the UP Board. For the first time, these candidates will have access to an improvement option in one of the five subjects.
The proposal is intended to support students who clear their examinations but secure lower marks because of illness, family situations or other unavoidable circumstances. Such results often affect admission prospects and future career plans. According to media reports, the board has received in-principle approval and is now awaiting final procedural clearance before implementing the system.
Board officials have stated that the improvement facility will be introduced in the Intermediate examination once formal government approval is completed. At present, the UP Board does not have an improvement mechanism for Intermediate students.
Similar systems are already operational under the Central Board of Secondary Education and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, where candidates are permitted to take improvement examinations in two subjects.
Compartment system already in place
The UP Board introduced a compartment system for Intermediate students in 2020. Under this arrangement, a candidate failing in one subject can reappear in that specific paper. Earlier, students who failed in a single subject were required to retake all five subjects. The improvement and compartment structure is already applicable at the high school level.
Holi security plan enforced
Meanwhile, the high school and Intermediate examinations are in their final phase. In view of the upcoming Holi festival, the board administration has issued strict directives to safeguard the examination process.
Senior officials have instructed all District School Inspectors and examination centre in-charges not to leave their headquarters. A special action plan has been prepared to prevent any lapse during the festive period.
Round-the-clock security surveillance has been arranged to protect question papers and answer sheets. Security personnel and static magistrates posted at examination centres have been directed to remain vigilant to ensure confidentiality remains intact.
