AHMEDABAD: As new four National Institutes of Design (NID) are being set up, the first NID here of the country will play the role of mentor for its counterparts to design the goals of future. City-based NID, which has two other institutes in Gandhinagar and Bangalore under its management, will now mentor the recently formed NID Vijaywada.
The government announced three more NIDs in Kuruskshetra, Bhopal and Jorhat, the city-based NID is all set to mentor those sister institutes in their curriculum and academic affairs.
NID-Ahmedabad was established in 1961 to begin design education in India. Like city-based premium institutes, including Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University, Indian Space and Research Organization (
ISRO) and MICA gave direction to formulate new ideas and solutions, now NID has also joined the league of becoming guiding light to its counterparts.
Dr Pradyumna Vyas, Director of NID-Ahmedabad, said that the faculties of the city-based institute will assist the academic affairs of NID-Vijaywada.
"NIDVijaywada has got its campus in Acharya Nagarjun University in Vijaywada town of Andhra Pradesh. Our staff is there to assist them," Vyas said. The faculties and staff of NID will keep assisting the NID Vijaywada until a new director is appointed there, he said.
The Design Aptitude Test for admission in NID Vijaywada is going to be conducted on December 10, which will be monitored by NID Ahmedabad.
New NIDs coming in Kurukshetra in Haryana, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Jorhat in Assam. As the government will grant land to those NIDs, the new institutes will come up, he said, adding that those new NIDs are likely to be set up within a year.
