MANGALURU: With an aim to encourage gardening among school students, celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava eco-friendly way and to put an end to use of plastic flags, Eco Friends Group will be distributing seed flags to students on Thursday.
Rajesh R, president of the Group told TOI, the team has prepared nearly 500 Kannada flags that will be distributed to five schools.
"The club has initiated several green programmes in Mangaluru. We have taken forward the 'Thota Ganapa' - eco-friendly Ganapa idol concept launched last year with the introduction of flags," he said.
Explaining about the flag, Rajesh said, the 2X3 inch Kannada flag comes with three layers of biodegradable paper. The team has placed tomato, okra and flower seeds in the paper pouch. The back portion of the flag has a safety pin and instructions on how to use the flag and plant seeds, he said.
The team will be distributing 100 flags through the organic gadiwala - a pushcart that sells organic vegetables at Mannagudda on Sunday. Next year, they plan to visit school and teach students how to prepare these flags, said Rajesh.
