VISAKHAPATNAM: With consistent rainfall over the past three months, this monsoon is set to be one of the wettest June-August periods in the state.

In Sept, the state will receive above normal rainfall. AP has recorded 27% excess rainfall between June and August, compared to the normal.



According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), against the normal rainfall of 369.5 mm, the state received 468.4 mm rainfall from June 1 to August 31.

Sri Sathyasai district recorded the largest excess rainfall (104%); Bapatla, Palnadu, Prakasam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and YSR Kadapa had normal rainfall and 19 other districts recorded excess rainfall.

Eighteen coastal districts and Yanam subdivision recorded 22% excess rainfall between June and Aug. Yanam received 534.9 mm of rainfall against the normal of 438.4 mm.

On Sept 1, against the normal average seasonal rainfall of 373.6 mm, the state received 506.6 mm. In 24 hours, from Aug 31 to Sep 1, the state received 38.2 mm rainfall against the normal of 4.1 mm , which translates to 832% excess rainfall, said IMD.

“The state’s farm sector growth will likely increase when compared to previous year as rains from June to Aug helped farmers to boost output of crops, including rice, sugarcane and others,” said M Srinivas, a farmer and activist in Vizag region.

Strong winds and squally weather are anticipated along the Kerala coast. Fishermen are cautioned to avoid the sea, and a high wave watch is also announced for Kannur and Kasaragod.
