Discussion held on rights of fishermen

Visakhapatnam: Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU), in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), organised an open house discussion on the ‘rights of fishermen’. Prof Surya Prakasa Rao, V-C of DSNLU, said identifying, protecting, and enforcing rights are fundamental responsibilities of any law university. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, the acting chairperson of NHRC and chief guest, demanded measures for protection of fishermen. TNN

Sri Lankan navy detains eight TN fishermen

The Sri Lankan navy detained eight Tamil Nadu fishermen and their trawler for poaching in the island's waters. This trawler was among 450 vessels from Rameswaram. The detained fishermen and vessel were handed over for legal proceedings. Meanwhile, another fishing boat capsized in Indian waters, with two fishermen missing.

Fishermen reel in more trash than fish at Agonda beach

In Canacona, large amounts of debris and plastic waste have been reported on Agonda beach over the past four days. Fishermen say they are catching more waste than fish, prompting them to pause certain traditional activities. They emphasize the need for greater awareness to prevent further contamination, impacting one of Goa's traditionally cleaner beaches.

Coast Guard saves 13 fishermen stranded near Dwarka

During heavy rains in Gujarat, the Indian Coast Guard rescued 13 stranded fishermen from the boat 'Padmawati' near Devbhumi Dwarka's coast. Responding to an Aug 27 distress call, the ICG deployed an ALH helicopter and ship 'Abheek.' Despite adverse weather, all crew were safely returned to Okha on Aug 28.
