Blast kills 5-year-old, injures 3 inside house

VIJAYAWADA: A five-year-old boy died and three of his family members received serious injuries after a can with unknown material exploded at Ganganammapet area in

mandal in Guntur district on Sunday. The deceased boy,

(5), was playing near the cylindrical can at the time of the blast.

According to Mangalagiri DSP, G Ramanjaneyulu, the incident happened when

who works as a painter was trying to open the sealed can. The can was there since last one year. We are suspecting a chemical reaction might have triggered the blast.

The can was supposed to be having some left over chemical. As it was left in open the chemical might have generated some kind of gases over a period of time. The gases might have got accumulated in the can and on Sunday when Nagaraju tried to open the lid, the accumulated gases caused a blast after exposing to oxygen in the environment. However, this is only a preliminary assumption based on observation of the blast site said Ramanjaneyulu.

Forensic experts have rushed to the spot to collect samples from the can to find out the material that was in the can. Ramanjaneyulu told that they would come to a conclusion on what caused the blast only after complete analysis of the blast material.

The blast was intense as four of the family members have severely injured. The five-year-old Goutam’s body parts have scattered and human flesh seen all over the place. He fell about 30ft away from the blast site. Goutam’s father Nagaraju, mother Bhavani and grandmother Nagamanemma were also severely injured in the incident.
