BHU, VMC ink MoU for sustainable urban devpt, civic initiatives
Varanasi: Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has signed an MoU with BHU for joint efforts in areas of urban management, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, civic services, beautification, and social development initiatives for the benefit of citizens and the academic community.
Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal and BHU registrar Prof Arun Kumar Singh signed the formal agreement.
As per the agreement, the municipal corporation will undertake several civic infrastructure and beautification projects in and around the university campus. These include development of storm water drainage infrastructure in Kandwa area, improvement of the Hyderabad Gate to Dafi corridor, and beautification and infrastructure enhancement near Malaviya Gate and the main entrance of BHU. The civic body will also facilitate horticulture development, urban landscaping, sanitation, and solid waste management measures in coordination with the university.
A major highlight of the collaboration is the creation of structured internship and capacity-building opportunities for BHU students. The municipal corporation will provide a minimum of 50 internship opportunities annually in areas such as urban governance, engineering works, planning, sanitation, and social initiatives. This will help students gain practical exposure in civic administration and urban management.
The MoU also envisions joint initiatives within the BHU campus for management of stray cattle, vaccination and control of stray dogs, and strengthening sanitation and civic coordination mechanisms.
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said, “The partnership will significantly strengthen the city’s efforts towards urban improvement, beautification, environmental sustainability, and effective civic service delivery. The academic expertise of BHU will greatly support the city’s development initiatives and help create a cleaner, greener, and better-managed Varanasi.”
BHU Vice-chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi said BHU and VMC are embarking on a new chapter of collaboration that will contribute significantly to bringing about positive change in the city. He said the internship opportunities for BHU students will provide valuable practical exposure and enrich students’ pursuit of professional excellence.
