Terbium-161 PTRT facility opens in state

Vadodara: Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre has become the first facility in Gujarat to introduce Terbium-161 FAPI PTRT (Peptide Targeted Radionuclide Therapy), an advanced nuclear medicine treatment aimed at improving outcomes for cancer patients, hospital officials said.The therapy marks a significant advancement in molecular radiotheranostics — a field that integrates diagnosis and treatment — offering a more precise and personalized approach to cancer care.Terbium-161 FAPI PTRT works by delivering targeted radiation directly to cancer-associated fibroblasts in the tumour microenvironment. This enables accurate tumour targeting while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.Hospital officials said the approach enhances treatment effectiveness, particularly in complex and treatment-resistant cancers. It is also associated with lower toxicity compared with conventional therapies, thereby improving patient tolerability and quality of life.Dr Avani Jain, consultant, nuclear medicine and theranostics, said the treatment's targeted mechanism allows effective destruction of tumour cells, including microscopic disease, while preserving healthy tissue.She added that the therapy shows promise across multiple cancer types, including pancreatic cancer, sarcomas and cholangiocarcinoma, with emerging applications in breast, colorectal, gastrointestinal and ovarian cancers.Ravi Hirwani, president of Bhailal Amin General Hospital, said the introduction reflects a growing shift towards personalized and precision-based oncology.
