14-year-old kickboxer punches her way to national glory
Vadodara: They once dreamed of stepping onto the national stage together, father and daughter, gloves on, hearts racing, chasing medals side by side. Fate, however, had other plans. When the Covid pandemic claimed the life of her father, Rakesh Panchal, 14-year-old Khushi Panchal's world fell apart. The man who had been her biggest fan, her first coach and her constant source of strength was suddenly gone. For a young girl grappling with grief and financial uncertainty, walking away from kickboxing would have been the easiest choice.
Khushi chose the harder one.Instead of quitting, she returned to the mat — carrying her loss, her pain and her father's unfinished dream with her. On Saturday, that resolve shone brightly as Khushi clinched two gold medals at the 5th Indian Open International Kickboxing Cup in New Delhi, extending a remarkable winning streak she has maintained for the last five years. Each medal, she says, belongs as much to her father as it does to her."My father was always my inspiration," Khushi said. "He encouraged me to take up kickboxing and even started training himself. We couldn't compete together at the national level, but every victory of mine is dedicated to him," she told TOI.A resident of Gotri, Khushi's journey began when she was just six years old. What started as a childhood activity soon became her identity. Her mother, Nirali, remembers those early days vividly. "She was so young, but even then she was focused and disciplined. Today, kickboxing is her life," said Nirali, who works with a private company and has stood firmly by her daughter through every high and low.Now a Class 9 student at St Kabir School, Khushi juggles textbooks with rigorous training schedules, showing a maturity well beyond her years. Her coach, Siddharth Bhalegare, believes her greatest battles were fought off the mat."Losing her father was the biggest setback of her life," he said. "But those challenges shaped her into a champion. Khushi is a fighter in every sense — mentally, emotionally and physically."The two gold medals in New Delhi are proof of her grit and unwavering focus, said Bhalegare, hoping to guide her to international competitions. He is working to secure sponsorships to support her journey abroad."Her life itself made her a champion," he said simply.
