Conversion case: Group of lawyers assault accused in court premises of Udaipur

Udaipur: A group of lawyers at the district and sessions court in Udaipur assaulted Thursday morning a man arrested on charges of coercing a 22-year-old woman to change her religion and passing an offensive comment against her on the court premises while he was being taken by cops for a hearing. However, Rakesh Mogra, president of Udaipur Bar Association, denied lawyers were involved in the assault. He said “people from outside” took the law into their own hands.In her police complaint, the woman alleged that 23-year-old Asif Ali had befriended her and pestered her to marry him and convert to his faith. She alleged that when she refused, Asif, his brother Khalid and their father Abdul Razaq piled pressure on her and the main accused even threatened that she would meet the fate of 16-year-old Sakshi, who was stabbed 21 times in Delhi recently. The trio was arrested after the complaint was lodged at Ambamata police station in Udaipur. Police said Asif has also been accused of assaulting the woman and trying to molest her for spurning him. The woman is from Chittorgarh and enrolled in a private college in Udaipur.
